The Mission of the Greater Minneapolis/St. Paul Basset Hound Club:
  • To encourage and promote the responsible breeding of pure-bred Basset Hounds and to do all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection
To urge members and breeders to accept the standard of the breed as approved by the American Kennel Club as the only standard of excellence by which Basset Hounds shall be judged

  • To do all in its power to protect and advance the interests of the breed by encouraging sportsmanlike competition at dog shows, obedience trials, tracking trials, and field trials
  • To conduct sanctioned and licensed specialty shows and obedience trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club

    What does The GMSPBHC Do?

  • The Club holds regular meetings that cover administrative issues (finances, committee reports, new member readings, etc.) as well as special meetings that allow members to learn about the basset hound or pet ownership. Past events have included conformation presentations and tips from a veterinarian with basset experience. We also hold an annual holiday party in December (typically no dogs invited for this!)
  • The Club organizes events that allows owners to bring their dogs to participate. In the last few years, these have included summer socials, agility, and tracking. Agility and tracking have been under the instruction and supervision of experienced club members. The annual general meeting in September is usually held at a local park and allows members to bring their dogs and get to know each other.
  • The Club participates in the annual Oakdale Parade held in June of each year. We typically get over 70 dogs participating as a "float" - this is a great opportunity to take your basset for a walk, meet the audience, and have a lot of fun!
  • In June, the Club organizes the Basset hound Specialty Show. Please watch the calendar for updates on times and location!
The Club organizes fund-raisers to support its activities. The fund raisers usually consist of members bringing an item that make up a large raffle. The more tickets you buy for the raffle, the more likely you are to win a great item. Items can range from basset novelties to doggie treats, dog food canisters, to household items you want to get rid of (a used TV and a VCR were donated recently).
